What do I do if my house has water damage?

If your home for flooded and damaged by water, do not stress out; you are not alone. Several people have a similar experience. However, for your residence to be habitable after flooding, you need to undertake a water damage restoration project. Many steps or processes are involved. Read further to know what you need to do.

  1. Phone Your Insurance Company

After suffering water damage, the first step is to contact your insurance company, depending on your homeowner’s insurance or the policies you have. Your insurance company will send a representative to assess the extent of damage and identify what your plan covers. You have to prepare a document, including the values and pictures of all damaged items, to help the representative in the assessment.

  1. Stop and Remove the Water

Another thing you must do is to stop the water inflow to your home and remove the water. Before you start removing water, ensure to shut off the electricity supply to your home to avoid electrical shock. Start the pump to remove the water in your home. If a burst pipe caused the flood, repair it immediately.

  1. Move Out Soaked Properties

You have to move out wet properties such as furniture, tables, mattress, and other wet properties. This will allow you to dry out your home without being hindered.

Alternatively, you can turn on your dehumidifier to dry your home effectively while keeping all wet properties indoor.

  1. Clean Up the Home

If you choose to clean your home yourself, wear protective gear the cleaning up should include removing the drywall, flooring, and insulation to prevent the growth and spread of mold and mildew Al over your home. Depending on the level of damage, you may dry your furniture outside the house or throw it away.

  1. Dry the Home Thoroughly

Every nook and cranny of your must be dried out completely, and ensure that you have successfully dried your damp belongings. However, you need the services of a water damage restoration company to keep the home adequately dry.

  1. Mold and Mildew Assessment

After drying your home, you must check everywhere and ensure that no mold or mildew is growing. It would be best to let the professionals carry out this assessment for the best results.

Keep in mind that if you experience water damage in your home, you must hire a water damage restoration company to restore your home. However, if you consider the cost of the loss to flooding, you should invest in basement waterproofing to prevent flooding.
