How to Lower Radon Levels in Your Basement Without Major Renovation

Radon is one of the most dangerous gases in Calgary. This is because we can’t smell or see it in the house. Mostly, it accumulates in basements, especially in places such as Calgary. If it is not dealt with on time, the gas may increase the risk of getting lung cancer.

Start With Simple Radon Testing

Are you looking to make some changes to your home? First, you must know the radon level in the house. You can do that by using DIY test kits or hiring experts.

If you live in Canada, you will find many reliable options for radon testing Calgary that many homeowners depend on.

Testing can help you determine which steps to take next. Tests above 200 Bq/m³ mean that you have to reduce the levels. Fortunately, you don’t require full renovations to achieve that.

Improve Basement Ventilation

Air movement will surely help push that gas out of the house. The best and simplest way is to open your windows for several hours daily. You may also use a fan to let out stale air and bring in fresh air.

To go even further, install an exhaust fan in the basement. This will help reduce the gas level by keeping it trapped. Remember to direct airflow outward instead of in other rooms.

Use an Air Purifier with Activated Carbon

Some air purifiers are designed to trap decay products related to radon. Go for purifiers with activated carbon filters. They will help if ventilation doesn’t suffice.

When using a purifier, place it in the middle of the base or near places with a high radon level. Ensure the system runs for good results and replaces its filters more regularly.

Cover Open Soil or Sump Pumps

A basement with an open sump pump or exposed pipes is often a target for gas entry. So, if your basement has a sump pump, make sure you seal it. You can use an airtight and fitted cover for that. It is easy to install and very effective.

You may consider using a plastic vapour barrier for crawl space or dirt floors. Just tape the walls’ edges and keep the sheet tight. With this, you will prevent the gas from leaking. But don’t worry if you have a tight budget. You can take these small steps to lower radon:

  • Add weatherstripping at the basement door.
  • Use a dehumidifier to keep the basement dry.
  • Avoid smoking in the basement, which makes the gas more harmful.

Call an Expert

If all the above tips don’t help, contact an expert immediately. An expert can install a mitigation system without tearing down floors or walls.

As a Calgary homeowner, you should always put your family’s safety first. With an expert’s help, you won’t just protect your family. You will also protect their health.

The bottom line is that you don’t need to update the entire basement in the house to get rid of the gas. Simple steps, like those discussed above, will help minimize the level of this deadly gas.
